The art of body piercing has been practiced by people from around the world since antiquity. Bodies mummified with piercings have been discovered, including the oldest mummified body discovered to date, the body is more 5300 years old & is that of Otzi the Iceman, found in an Austrian glacier. Otzi had an ear piercing 7-12 mm in diameter, and tattoos.

Lip & tongue piercing was historically found in African-American & tribal cultures.

Nipple & genital perforation, dates back to the ancient India & ancient Rome.

The former as Romans believed firmly in the art of piercing, they used piercings to show force, & virility. In Roman culture, piercings were often worn as badges of honour, genital perforation was common among the Gladiators.

Almost all the Egyptians wore loops of ear to display their wealth & for aesthetic reasons.

When French trappers discovered Amerindian tribes, they named them the "Nez", meaning "pierced nose" in French.

Ancient tribes wore bones through their nostrils to create fear, war, where the septum perforation is originating.

Lip Labret piercings would be originally in Central & South America, where they became popular for purely aesthetic reasons. Lip plates were often used. The Maya & Aztèques had labrets with gold and jade.
